U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, held a phone conversation this Wednesday, marking their first contact since Trump assumed the presidency. During the call, the two leaders agreed to initiate negotiations to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Trump assigned his diplomatic team to begin the talks immediately. Among those tasked with the negotiations are Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

The U.S. president described the conversation as “very productive” and stated that various topics were discussed, including Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and the strength of the dollar.


Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the call lasted approximately an hour and a half.


After speaking with Putin, Trump also communicated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he described as an ally in the pursuit of peace.

Trump expressed optimism about the outcomes of an upcoming meeting between his Vice President, J.D. Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference, scheduled for February 14.
